"Ballpoint Pen Sketches on Jan 29"
A few new sketches from earlier today.
Earlier this month, I went to a Voodoo Glow Skulls concert. They're a Mexican themed ska punk band. It was my third time seeing them, and it was their best show I've seen yet!
So I got a bit inspired by drawing some stuff of them. Also, some Simpsons stuff got thrown in there, too.

Okay, I'm not sure how well this is going to reach but;
Do we get any indication through the seasons as to the guys' specific music taste? 🎶 (Buck, Eddie and Tommy)
Here are my thoughts, please confirm or ellaborate:
Buck : East coast kid probably enjoys some level of punk, ska, and pop. Definitely of the generation for Reel Big Fish, Green Day, MxPx. maybe a smidge of country?
Tommy : gives me big divorced-dad rock vibes (Nickleback, Daughtry, Shinedown, Buckcherry...) and also a smidge of country. and he's not above belting some Gaga in the shower
Eddie : he's the one I have the hardest time with. I wanna say he most likely has latino roots in there; reggeaton, niche Mexican/Cuban artists. But I have a feeling there's rap in there too?
Help a girl out? 👀🙏✨️

Photos: Gwen Stefani celebrates Honda Center’s 30th anniversary with fans in Anaheim
“You are my community, you are my people,” pop star Gwen Stefani told the sold-out and cheering crowd at Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday night, Sept. 9. “I am so grateful for every single person who listened to my music all these years.”
Stefani — who was born and raised in a home just a few miles from the arena where her band No Doubt formed — received a mighty welcome from the hometown crowd. It was a family affair, too, as her mother and father, Dennis and Patti Stefani, and her younger brother, Todd Stefani, and sister-in-law, Jennifer, were also in attendance and spotted singing along.
Before the show, fans were seen dressed in various signature Stefani style and posing in front of themed photo ops located throughout the arena. While most embraced the No Doubt “Tragic Kingdom” more rockabilly look, others went for Stefani’s “Return of Saturn” cotton candy pink hair era; and there were plenty sporting her more glam L.A.M.B. fashion made popular in her “The Sweet Escape” and “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” solo album days.
Tapped to help the venue celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, Stefani has now played at Honda Center (formerly The Arrowhead Pond) 10 times, tying her with British singer and pianist Elton John and Mexican singer-songwriter and musician Marco Antonio Solís for the artists who have performed on that stage the most.
With it being a hometown show, she did bust out a few things that were special. Since she’s gone solo and No Doubt has been on hiatus since 2015, Stefani has long peppered in No Doubt’s ska and reggae-infused hits with her more pop-focused solo material. And while she’s added some fun covers into the setlist through the years (like “The Tide is High” by The Paragons) and often brings out husband and country star Blake Shelton to duet on a few tunes (the more country-leaning “Nobody But You” “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and “Happy Anywhere”), there were popular No Doubt songs absent from the performances that fans begged for on social media.
She must have been feeling a bit nostalgic on Saturday night as she busted out a stripped down version of No Doubt’s 1995 single “Excuse Me Mr.,” which she prefaced by saying she hadn’t played it in so long because she had “gotten over it.” She also played the 2000 hit, “Simple Kind of Life,” noting that it was “the first song I wrote on my own on guitar.”

What sort of music would your OCs listen to/do they represent ?
I actually have playlists for almost all of my ocs! You can find those here :] Spotify
The easy answers would be
Isabelle loves Metal music, anything from the 2000s has a soft spot in her heart and reminds her of her youth. She's also a huge fan of Mexican Huasteco, mainly because she's a dancer, but also enjoys Yolanda Del Rio when it comes to Mariachi <3 I associate the song La Hija De Nadie the most with her!
Lola loves orchestra and Piano, she's very fond of ballet pieces like the Nutcracker and Swan Lake because she grew up dancing Ballet. I do however heavily associate her with Kate Bush, and credit The Wedding List as her song!
Dalia loves alt rock and things of that nature. I've always imagined her being a big fan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Siouxsie and the Banshees! Her entire character was inspired by a song by Fever the Ghost :3
Kylie loves trashy 2000s Pop and is a VERY dedicated Kesha fan, she loves anything loud, fun, and danceable!
Viv is a fan of electronic alt, she really loves Tikkle Me and Grimes, she was heavily inspired by the song Blow My Brains out!
Florist love love LOVES New wave and 80s rock music. It makes her feel comfortable and nostalgic, and is strangely one of the few things she can remember. She's a huuuuge Talking Heads fan!!!
Miss Guijarro finds enjoyment in 80s rock and old New Wave like Japan, DEVO, and Oingo Boingo. She likes the slower paced songs and listens to music to calm her down from panic attacks :3
Elodia of course, loves V-Kei and goth music! She's super into Malice Mizer, Versailles, and Unlucky Morpheus! I'd imagine that she's also pretty fond of classical music as well :3
Belladonna LOOVES Latin Jazz and performs with her very own band all the time! She's also obsessed with old swing music, stuff from the 1940s and jazz from the 20s. Donna loves Bachata and Merengue as well, as any latina should!!
Feliz is a fan of rap music, such as SPM or ICP, but has a soft spot for Latin rock like Malo, and Tejano like Selena!
Leo is a classical music enjoyer all the way, and he owns tons of vinyl records with Waltzes on em. He also has a soft spot for Tom Lehrer, and loooves Mark Bernes, a Russian singer from the 1940s. Such old music reminds him of the music his parents would play, and he looks back fondly on him and Lola listening to the songs as kids.
Isaiah goes crazy for Mexican 90s Ska, as well as Boleros. He also has a bit of a soft spot for Mariachi, as he used to play as one. I think that the song "Pachuco" by Maldita fits him very well! :3

In that case I might not be of that much help because I don't know that much music from Spain (I was raised to hate the accent haha), but I do love Argentinan music so maybe I can recommend albums from there instead 😁
(Also I'm not sure if our music tastes match at all so I'm sorry if you won't like them)
Argentinan classic rock:
Pescado Rabioso 2 by Pescado Rabioso
Artaud by Pescado Rabioso
(you can also just go for Lo Mejor de Pescado Rabioso)
Billy Bond y la Pesada del Rock and Roll by Billy Bond y la Pesada
Argentinan ska (and mix of genres):
El León by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
I almost recommend a Sumo album too for Argentina, but I remembered their singer was British-Italian so their songs are in English :/
The most Spanish music I listen to (though you might already know them, and also they are I guess technically French):
Patchanka by Mano Negra
Puta's Fever by Mano Negra
Aand let me recommend some Mexican stuff too, because at least they are in Spanish and I know a bigger variety:
"Mexican The Cure":
Caifanes self titled
El Silencio by Caifanes
80s/90s pop rock:
Mundo Feliz by Fobia
Café Tacvba self titled (though I guess this one is more than pop rock)
Bon y los Enemigos del Silencio self titled
Ska fusion/punk rock:
Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos de 5to Patio self titled
El Circo by Maldita Vecindad
Sorry if this is not helpful at all, I'm just always happy to talk about music in Spanish (or more specifically rock in Spanish)
oh my god thank you so much!!

Negative traits:
Self-Neglect: ¿Remember when I said this man has a very high pain tolerance? Well, in reality it has to do less with what he's feeling and more with how little importance he gives to the physical, emotional or psychological pain he has at the moment, he often sees himself as “less” than the others and thinks his injuries or necessities are a burden.
“Mecha Corta”: Which means he basically has little to none patience when it comes to things that may annoy him, he can get angry or desperate easily in a matter of seconds, If he's mad, he will constantly make you know by his mood, his expressions or even his way to speak towards you or the others.
Prideful: Dientes often confuses dignity with pride or ego. The fact that he was constantly bullied throughout his whole life does not help either, so It is not surprise when he commits risky or stupid actions just to “prove” himself to the rest.
Biography
(English is not my first language, I apologize for bad translation and grammar T-T)
Born alongside his twin in a rural Mixtec community, he was the eldest among his siblings and the most adventurous too. His father, an old drunkard who constantly lived in debt, found himself entangled in financial troubles with a local cartel in the area. So in an attempt to appease said debts, he sold his son to the cartel without the consent of his wife, and Vicente never saw his family again.
He spent that part of his childhood being exploited by the cartel, forced to work as a servant. It wasn't until one day, while playing in the cartel's garden, that he encountered a young Rodolfo Parra (just a low-ranking soldier during that time) trying to infiltrate and dismantle the place. The kid proposed to help Rodolfo on his mission in exchange for his freedom, a proposition to which the soldier agreed.
The boy earned the soldier's affection and care after the mission, leading Rodolfo to volunteer and become Vicente's temporary legal guardian. He became both a father figure and a mentor for him. Inspired by Rodolfo, Vicente decided to follow his same footsteps. Upon turning 18, he enrolled in military school and graduated with honors.
After this event, he distanced himself from Rudy a bit in an attempt to become more independent, especially as Rodolfo had been sent to apprehend "La Araña" cartel at that time. It was then that Vicente was assigned to be part of what would be his first significant mission: investigating possible drug trafficking routes that had recently formed in Chetumal, Quintana Roo. This mission not only ended in a complete failure but also left a lasting mark on Vicente for the rest of his days.
Very little is known about what actually happened, but based on official information and testimonies, his team was ambushed by a cartel known as "Las Palmas". Of the entire team, only Vicente survived. He was tortured for weeks and presumed dead, declared Missing in Action until three months later, when his unconscious body was found a few blocks away from where the leader of "Las Palmas" was found dead. The boy had multiple wounds and cuts all over his skin, especially with one on his lips so wide that it exposed his teeth, earning him the nickname "Dientes" (Teeth).
By the time Rodolfo saw the boy again, he found him in such a mentally deplorable and agonizing state due to the Chetumal incident that he regretted being absent at that time. He secretly swore never to lose sight of his son again, and true to his word, Rodolfo enlisted Vicente in the Mexican Special Forces and assigned him to work with him and "Los Vaqueros." This way, he wouldn't lose sight of Vicente again and would be able to protect him up closely.
Vicente currently resides in Las Almas, Tamaulipas. Over time, he has significantly improved his health and become a crucial member of his team.

Margaritas Podridas is an alternative rock band hailing from Hermosillo, Mexico that channels the ferocity of grunge and the melancholy of shoegaze. They released their first album, Porcelain Mannequin, in 2018. After releasing a self-titled album three years later, Carolina Enriquez, bassist/vocalist for the group, sits down for an interview.
How did you start playing bass?
I started playing bass because everyone in my family played guitar, and my dad was very sexist and told me I sucked when I was just beginning at age 10. I got sick of playing guitar and started using it as a bass until I got a real 5-string bass at age 14 and started joining bands.
Who are your bass influences?
Not proud to admit it but Sid Vicious was one of the first reasons I started playing bass because I liked the Pistols and Glen Matlock's bass lines were very cool, but I liked Sid's rebellious character until I grew up and understood he was a violent asshole that very probably killed Nancy. After that I looked after other figures like Lynz from Mindless Self Indulgence because I loved her stage energy, and then of course Krist Novoselic, D'Arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins, Kristen Pfaff from Hole, and Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads. I like simple sticky playful bass lines and sick performers.
Is there a big grunge/rock scene in Hermosillo?
There were a lot of punk bands and people who listened to grunge in the 90s but they played punk and are mostly in their fifties now. They still play but only at a local level. Liking Nirvana and other mainstream bands is not considered very punk rock in Mexico. Punks in Mexico tend to listen to bands that sing in Spanish and talk about economic and political issues, ska-punk and reggae are more common.
There weren't really any other "grunge" bands that I know in Hermosillo besides tribute bands, until Margaritas Podridas came out. Other teens who also liked grunge and alt-rock started playing live, like Buzz Kill, Necromorfo, Anemona Asesina, and then other bands started getting noisier. I think we were seen as gringo wannabes because we liked those bands and most people and even other bands from the community did not take us seriously. Also because of their internalized misogyny, but once we dropped songs in Spanish and showed them we didn't give a fuck lots of new fans and media started to pay attention.
I admit there is a lot of American culture in grunge and rock in general, but that doesn't mean Mexicans can't make it or that we are only allowed to play ska-punk and sing about our shitty government. But yeah grunge bands are mostly tributes. There was a grunge band called Daisy Chain and I think there's a new band called Grunsch now.

Albert Hofmann
Swiss chemist known for being the first to synthesize, ingest, and learn of the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide(LSD). Hofmann's team also isolated, named and synthesized the principal psychedelic mushroomcompounds psilocybin and psilocin.
Of his decision to pursue a career as a chemist, Hofmann provided insight during a speech he delivered to the 1996 Worlds of Consciousness Conference in Heidelberg, Germany:
Discovery of LSD
In 1929 Hofmann became an employee of the pharmaceutical/chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories (now a subsidiary of Novartis) as a coworker of Arthur Stoll, founder and director of the pharmaceutical department. He began studying the medicinal plant Drimia maritima(squill) and the fungus ergot as part of a program to purify and synthesize active constituents for use as pharmaceuticals. His main contribution was to elucidate the chemical structure of the common nucleus of the Scilla glycosides (an active principle of Mediterranean squill). While researching lysergic acid derivatives, Hofmann first synthesized LSD on 16 November 1938. The main intention of the synthesis was to obtain a respiratory and circulatory stimulant (analeptic) with no effects on the uterus in analogy to nikethamide (which is also a diethylamide) by introducing this functional group to lysergic acid. It was set aside for five years, until 16 April 1943, when Hofmann reexamined it and discovered its powerful effects. He described what he felt as being:
Three days later, on 19 April 1943, Hofmann intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of LSD. This trip was not as pleasant, as he said those around him appeared to become demons, furniture shifted into wicked creatures and he himself felt demonically possessed. This day is now known as "Bicycle Day", because he began to feel the effects of the drug as he rode home on a bike. This was the first intentional LSD trip.
Hofmann's research with LSD influenced several psychiatrists, including Ronald A. Sandison, who developed its use in psychotherapy. Sandison's treatment at Powick Hospital in England received international acclaim.
Hofmann continued to take small doses of LSD throughout his life, and always hoped to find a use for it. In his memoir, he emphasized it as a "sacred drug": "I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality."
Further research
Hofmann later discovered 4-Acetoxy-DET, a hallucinogenic tryptamine. He first synthesized 4-AcO-DET in 1958 in the Sandoz lab. Hofmann became director of Sandoz's natural products department and continued studying hallucinogenic substances found in Mexican mushrooms and other plants used by aboriginal people there. This led to the isolation and synthesis of psilocybin, the active agent of many "magic mushrooms". Hofmann also became interested in the seeds of the Mexican morning glory species Turbina corymbosa, called ololiuquiby natives. He was surprised to find the active compound of ololiuqui, ergine (LSA, lysergic acid amide), to be closely related to LSD.
In 1962, Hofmann and his wife Anita Hofmann traveled to Mexico to search for the psychoactive plant "Ska Maria Pastora" (Leaves of Mary the Shepherdess), later known as Salvia divinorum. He was able to obtain samples of it, but never succeeded in identifying its active compound, which has since been identified as salvinorin A. In 1963, Hofmann attended the annual convention of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences(WAAS) in Stockholm.

Music is definitely the medium that I'm more "closeminded" about, because I mostly listen to Italian music and little else (some spanish/basque ska punk, american rap and blues, some levantine music but its mostly resistance songs and some mexican and latam songs, even here mostly revolutionary music) but I listen to enough hyper underground far left punk and similar that I think I can still act a little smug about it

i can't believe i never realized that US American Folk music heavily permeates the pop music that's popular today. Like just because US Americans don't have say, Rancheras or straight-up anything that they refer to as a folkloric genre of modern music, doesn't mean it's not there.
I tried listening to Chapell Roan and while I like her as a visual artist and performer and person, her music doesn't have what I look for (which is harmonic and melodic complexity and an interesting blend of timbres but that's beside the point). However, if you had blindfolded me and played her music, I would say "Wow this is sooo American Folk, clearly this artist derives from the classics of American Folk music." but I don't think her fans would hear it like that. I had a similar experience listening to Alanis Morrissette and even Avril Lavigne. AvrilLavignes's "Complicated" sounds so country I don't understand why I have never heard anyone point that out before. Yet both alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne are recognized as explicitly rock stars.
I don't have a particular thesis here, maybe it's that rock being such a global music genre means that even American Folk music inevitably tendrils into other countries' popular music spheres (though I'm a fan of 60's mexican rock and 90s Mexican ska rock so maybe I shouldn't even complain). But I'm more struck by the absence of like, recognition. Do fans of Chapell Roan not hear her as a descendant American Folk? at all? Like that would be like someone hearing Peso Pluma and thinking he isn't either. Brazilian Phonk is gaining popularity as well and don't we all hear that as like. explicitly Brazilian. But do people hear American musicality someone like Alanis Morissette or sometimes Avril Lavigne or Chapell Roan?
The other thing I wanted to point out (that I can't believe i never noticed) is that the composition of these musicians IS explicitly American in maybe the same way a modern take on Mariachi or Bachatas or Cumbias or Reggaeton is. Those genres gain popularity because of their cultural relevance as dance music (and then you know, cumbia especially, became more popular and commercialized and became more compositionally simple). US American culture has less of this trend. Lots of American Folk music is heavily harmony and chord-progression based. It makes sense when you consider the primarily religious function of music from colonization and onwards. I always found it curious that most American Folk musicians were soloists, just them and the guitar, nothing like drum + charango + violin or something. YES I am aware of the bluegrass and old time bands, but those genres did not reach popularity as American Folk music in the same way like um. Joni Mitchell did. Yes I'm aware that Black Jazz bands and Black Church choirs constitute American Folk music, but historically those genres have been separate in such a way that they produced distinct musical descendants (and also the reason for which white rappers and jazz and RnB musicians either weren't a thing or just made music that was audibly different from the original).
Anyway what I'm saying here is that isn't it fucking crazy that like. Someone like Chapell Roan sounds like an American Folk musican, because she is, her music is composed and sung that way. But it's bizarrely not seen as an American cultural thing, its just "global" now. But she's so clearly a product of American Folk music! Like I can't imagine anyone doing that with like, Peso Pluma or like even Bad Bunny. Even Americans themselves dont see her as a continuation of their Folk music (at least i dont think so? idk i dont listen to that much American Folk music at all ever, so Im mostly basing this on online comments about her and how she is talked about in the news). Like it drives me a little crazy that white US americans DO have, in a way, folkloric cultural knowledge/tradition but like. dont see it that way.
Im not even going to touch on the global nature on rock music because tbh thats kind of a different can of worms since rock music is like. black (and west/north African) at its core.
(anyway send asks about any genre of music anywhere in the world i will probably know something about it)
#n.txt#ethnomusicology#also like despite the fact ive spent a decade and a half in the US#i never listened to American folk music or really American pop music ever#only 2000s American metal had an impact on me#which meant i was constantly out of the loop (and still am)#but its weird to be able to see US folk music and pop music as like#an outsider#I had to take an actual literal class on US rock music to learn something about american folk/rock music lmaooo

Extrait de OFF LIMITS: MEXICAN CHOLOS GANGS TERRITORIES IN THE ERA OF GLOBALIZATIOn de Nathalie Augier deMoussac lien

Chanson mythique "I'm just a girl" sur l'album Tragic Kingdom.

Events

Coachella 2024 Line-Up
The 2024 Coachella music festival, set for two weekends in April at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, will feature a stellar lineup including Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, and Doja Cat as headliners. Also making a comeback is the ska band No Doubt, led by Gwen Stefani, marking their first performance together since 2015. The lineup is further bolstered by the presence of Blur and rising rap sensation Ice Spice. Each of the headliners has a history with Coachella. Lana Del Rey, who last performed at the festival in 2014 and was scheduled for the 2020 event that was canceled due to Covid, returns to the stage. Doja Cat, fresh from her 2022 performance, and Tyler, the Creator, a festival regular since his 2011 debut with Odd Future and subsequent solo appearances in 2015 and 2018, will also grace the festival. Tyler is noted for his guest performances with other rappers at Coachella in past years. Entertainment news outlet Variety reported that both Dua Lipa and Shakira were considered as potential headliners for the event. Sources revealed to Variety that Dua Lipa turned down the opportunity due to scheduling conflicts, whereas organizers decided not to go with Shakira. This year's lineup also includes the band Deftones, the Mexican artist Peso Pluma, and Bleachers, led by Jack Antonoff. In recent years, Coachella has experienced its share of headliner-related issues. Both Kanye West and Frank Ocean have withdrawn from their headlining slots at the last minute. Notably, Ocean canceled his performance for the festival's second weekend after delivering a first weekend show that received mixed reviews, featuring pre-recorded vocals and unusual stage antics. As North America's biggest music festival, Coachella has already sold out all of its 125,000 daily tickets. Fans still looking to attend can try to purchase three-day passes, which go on sale this Friday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time during the festival's pre-sale event. Read the full article
